In concrete slab construction, F-Numbers are the metric for quality of the floor. They consist of the concrete floor flatness (FF) and floor levelness (FL). The American Concrete Institute (ACI) requires F-number measurements to be taken within 72 hours of slab installation.

F-numbers associated with concrete aren’t a simple measurement, but rather, F-numbers are created from several measurements and then run through a formula that calculates a number. Because it is a complicated and tedious procedure, it required specialized equipment.

FF / FL, EXPLAINED

FF and FL work together to control levelness and flatness of the floor. In order to serve its purpose, the concrete floor should be both flat and level.

Floor Flatness (FF): FF values measure how smooth and even a concrete floor is. Irregularities such as grooves, bumps, and deviations lower the FF rating, while higher values indicate a flatter surface.

Floor Levelness (FL): FL values reflect the degree of tilt or slope in the slab. A higher FL rating signifies a more level floor with minimal inclines or variations.

FF and FL Together: Both FF and FL ratings are essential in ensuring a concrete floor meets its intended function. For optimal performance, a floor should be both flat and level.
